In 2013, European Southern Observatory celebrated 50 years of existence. During these five decades, ESO has accomplished incredible success in conduction of astronomical observations, which has profoundly deepened our understanding of the Universe.

ESO operates telescopes such as Very Large Telescope, which made indisputable influence on observational astronomy. ESO plans construction of the world’s biggest telescope, called European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which will be about half the size of football stadium. Groundbreaking event, that marked beginning of the E-ELT construction, took place on 19th of June this year, when Cerro Armazones summit was levelled. Another project called ALMA is comprised of 66 submillimetre antennas and the last of them was transported in June to the heights of Chajnantor Plateau at 5000 m above sea level, in Chile. ALMA operates with highest precision and it will allow astronomers to tackle some of the most important questions of our cosmic origin.
